Details about cancelled Bungie game ‘Payback’ leak out after layoffs

Bungie just underwent another round of layoffs and employees both current and former are not too pleased with the way management has handled things since agreeing to sell to Sony. As a result, there have been a few leaks, including new details on ‘Payback', a game that many believed to be the codename for Destiny 3.

Bungie does not appear to have any plans for Destiny 3 right now and as it turns out ‘Payback' was not the codename for Destiny 3 either. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Payback was instead going to be a third-person game set in the Destiny universe, rather than a true sequel.

According to Schreier's sources, Payback was going to be a third-person shooter, set in the Destiny universe, that would “shake up the formula in major ways”. This includes battles with monsters, puzzle solving and cooperative elements, taking inspiration from games like Monster Hunter, or even Genshin Impact but without the gacha mechanics.

For whatever reason though, Bungie cancelled Payback earlier this year, freeing up resources to focus on other upcoming titles, like Marathon, which was delayed to 2025.

KitGuru Says: Bungie being so adamantly against Destiny 3 flies in the face of common sense at this point. For many veterans, The Final Shape was their jumping off point for Destiny. A new Destiny game would have provided a good reset point, stripping out the years worth of bloat currently putting off new players from really getting into the game. As it currently stands, the New Player Experience in Destiny 2 is frankly awful, so I'm not sure how Bungie intends to convince new or lapsed players to join Destiny 2 in the years ahead.
