Cyberpunk 2077’s core team is forming a new US-based studio for sequel

Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red revealed its roadmap of upcoming titles, ranging from a new trilogy of Witcher games to a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. While The Witcher will continue to be developed at the company's main studio in Poland, Cyberpunk's sequel will be created at a newly set up studio in the United States.

Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, codenamed ‘Orion', will be developed at a newly set up CD Projekt Red office in Boston, Massachusetts, according to Paweł Sasko. Sasko worked as the lead quest designer on Cyberpunk 2077 and was promoted to Quest Director for the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion, as well as the game's upcoming sequel. Sasko later added that he is still working on Phantom Liberty for now, but the focus will shift to Project Orion after that.

Sasko and a few other members of the ‘core team' for Cyberpunk 2077 will be moving to start up this new studio in Boston. The team will be assisted by CD Projekt Red teams in Vancouver, Canada, and Warsaw, Poland.

There is no timeline for when we'll see Project Orion. Cyberpunk 2077 production took many years, and while they've built an excellent version of Night City already, the next game might not use the RED Engine, and may instead move over to Unreal Engine 5, much like the next Witcher trilogy. If true, they may not be able to reuse assets from the original game. With that in mind, we'll have to be patient.

The announcement of Project Orion also seems to confirm that Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. After that, all focus will shift towards the sequel.
