Cyberpunk 2077 sales surge leads to CD Projekt Red’s best Q3 ever

Ahead of its launch, Cyberpunk 2077 had millions of pre-orders and within two week's of the game's launch, around 13 million copies had been sold. Of course, that was before we all learned how bad the launch version was. This caused Cyberpunk 2077 sales to slow quite a bit in 2021, to the point where CD Projekt stopped sharing figures. That has now changed with the game's recent surge of popularity.

Back in September, Cyberpunk 2077 soared back to the top of gaming charts, in part thanks to the game's 1.6 update, which further polished the game for current-gen consoles and PC. The big catalyst here though was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a Netflix anime series based in the Cyberpunk universe. While the show didn't directly tie into the game, you do see some recognisable characters and of course, the whole thing takes place in Night City, so there is plenty of familiar scenery for those who have played the game.

Following on from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 saw around two million additional game sales, bringing the total number of sales of the game up to 20 million. This helped CD Projekt Red achieve its strongest third quarter ever, generating around $54 million in revenue, with around $21 million in profit.

CD Projekt Red revealed this in its latest financial earnings report, covering up to September 30th. The report also includes a breakdown of what the various teams throughout the company are working on. Unsurprisingly, the upcoming Cyberpunk expansion, Phantom Liberty, has the biggest team behind it, and the team working on the next Witcher saga has grown over the last quarter too.
