CD Projekt Red is laying off roughly 10 percent of its development team

Last year, CD Projekt Red announced a huge roadmap of titles, with a new Witcher trilogy, new Witcher spin-off games and a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel all making the list. Unfortunately right now, all of these projects are in the early stages and as a result, CD Projekt Red has found itself to be “overstaffed”. 

This week, CD Projekt posted a new organisational update, confirming plans to lay off around 100 developers, which equates to just under 10 percent of the company's workforce.

In the announcement, CD Projekt Red CEO, Adam Kicińsk, said: “There’s no easy way to say this, but today we are overstaffed. We have talented people on board who are finishing their tasks and based on current and expected project needs, we already know we don’t have other opportunities for them in the next year.”

Typically, game development starts off with smaller teams in pre-production, with the team scaling up to full production size once all the groundwork and planning has taken place. While CD Projekt Red does have a lot of games in development right now, they are all in the early stages, so an announcement like this is in keeping with industry trends.

KitGuru Says: The games industry is constantly shedding talent. I do think studios should do more to keep their teams together for future projects but currently, that just isn't how the business works. As CD Projekt Red isn't a studio that relies heavily on live-service revenue and microtransactions, the need to reduce costs in-between major projects is a bit more understandable.
