Blizzard is winding down development on Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard began winding down development on Heroes of the Storm a couple of years ago and now, it looks like the team is ready to move on for good. Moving forward, Blizzard's MOBA will essentially go into maintenance mode, ensuring the game remains operational but with no further content planned.

Blizzard announced the change in a blog post late last week, thanking fans for supporting the game over the years, but confirmed that much like StarCraft, Heroes of the Storm development will be winding down even further.

“This June marks the seven-year anniversary of Heroes of the Storm. Combining legendary characters from all of our universes, it naturally brought players together into a truly unique experience. Heroes and its community are home to some of the most passionate gamers from around the world and we’re committed to making sure that you can continue to enjoy your adventures through the Nexus. ”

“Moving forward we will support Heroes in a manner similar to our other longstanding games, StarCraft and StarCraft II. In the future, we’ll continue seasonal rolls and hero rotations, and while the in-game shop will remain operational there are no plans for new for-purchase content to be added. Future patches will primarily focus on client sustainability and bug fixing, with balance updates coming as needed.”

Players will get an Epic Arcane Lizard mount as part of next week's patch for the game as a thank you to those still playing the game. Like other legacy Blizzard titles, the game will still get updates to ensure it runs on modern PCs and the occasional balance or bug patch.

KitGuru Says: Heroes of the Storm was never the world's number one MOBA, but it had a good run for a few years there. It always seemed to me that the lack of esports success is what led to higher-ups wanting to scale back on the game. Did many of you play HOTS back in the day?
