Blizzard goes live with first World of Warcraft: Dragonflight alpha test

Earlier this year, Blizzard officially announced World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the next major expansion for the long-running MMO. While we initially weren’t sure if the expansion would launch this year, Blizzard has since confirmed plans for a 2022 release, and now, players can get their first taste of the new content.

This week, Blizzard went live with the WoW: Dragonflight alpha, inviting a small number of players to log in and test upcoming expansion features and content. The alpha also includes one of the expansion’s four new zones, Azure Span.

The alpha also adds the dragon riding skill to the game, which is a new method of aerial travel for this expansion, as well as the Dracthyr Evokers class and race.

In order to get access to World of Warcraft alpha tests, you have to opt-in for invites on your battle.net account. After that, you’ve just got to keep an eye on your emails for any potential invitations. Typically with these early alphas, Blizzard starts off small and prioritises long-standing community members, WoW streamers and other content creators. The number of invites sent out should increase with future tests, but as always, it is worth keeping in mind that progress made during these tests does not carry over.
