Atomic Heart reportedly set for a sequel

There was a lot of excitement around Atomic Heart following the game's lengthy development period. The game did end up doing fairly well, garnering a 74 overall score on open critic and it seems that the developers at Mundfish are already planning a sequel.

While not officially announced by Mundfish, someone at the studio did tell Russian games reporter, Aleksey Makarenkov, that a sequel is in the works. The news was swiftly picked up by English outlets like Twisted Voxel and Insider Gaming.

The first Atomic Heart took five years to develop, although the game may have released a little earlier if not for the pandemic. Before Mundfish can turn its full attention to the sequel, it needs to wrap up work on upcoming DLCs for the first game.

Atomic Heart takes some clear inspiration from BioShock, but ultimately, the game's campaign was viewed as a little too long and the level design has also been criticised by reviewers. There was also some criticism of the writing, particularly when it comes to main character dialogue. Still, there is a good base to work from here, so if a sequel could trim some of the fat and create a more cohesive game world, it could end up making a leap.
