Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV are coming to Xbox

Earlier this week, a ratings board listing revealed that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is likely coming to Xbox. Now, as part of the series' 25th anniversary celebration, Microsoft has announced that both Age of Empires II and Age of Empires IV will be heading to console.

Both games have already been available on PC via Steam and Xbox Game Pass for quite some time. Now, they will be heading to Xbox consoles in 2023, with Age of Empires II arriving in January and Age of Empires IV arriving later in the year.

The Xbox version will support gamepads, in addition to a mouse and keyboard. The game will also get optional crossplay for multiplayer, and the games will finally be accessible via xCloud too.

Unfortunately, we have yet to see the gamepad control scheme. Translating RTS games to console can be tricky, particularly due to the need for simpler gamepad controls. Still, there have been a few successful attempts at doing this.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see how well Age of Empires plays with a controller over a keyboard and mouse. I imagine it will certainly take some getting used to for both new and old players.
