Activision confirms Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot sequel and next-gen Warzone

Last night, Activision took the time to officially confirm a few recent leaks. Firstly, it is now confirmed that Infinity Ward is developing Modern Warfare 2 as this year's Call of Duty – a sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, not to be confused with the original Modern Warfare 2, or its more recent remaster.

Not only will we be getting Modern Warfare 2 this year, but we will also be getting a new Call of Duty: Warzone “experience”, which ties in with recent rumours that Warzone 2 is in the works, which will remove the bloat accumulated in current Warzone and target next-gen consoles, giving the developers a fresh start.

Infinity Ward is working on both Modern Warfare 2 and the new version of Warzone, mirroring the development cycle for 2019's Modern Warfare and the original version of Warzone. After launch, we would expect to see Warzone development handed off to a studio like Raven Software, which currently handles Warzone content updates and patches.

There are no release dates yet, but we would expect to see Modern Warfare 2 in November, followed by Warzone a month or so later in December.

KitGuru Says: For me, Modern Warfare (2019) was the last good Call of Duty, so I've got my fingers crossed that Infinity Ward can give the franchise a return to form this year with a sequel.
