Fallout 3 remake project canceled over potential copyright issues

Update (13/03/18): Just two weeks after announcing the ambitious project, the team behind the Capital Wasteland mod have announced that they are cancelling development. This mod was set to remake Fallout 3 within Fallout 4, an idea that has been explored with other games in the series. Unfortunately, after discussing their plans with some people at Bethesda, the group known as ‘Road to Liberty' realised that they could end up facing legal action if they continued.

In a statement, the group wrote: “Recently we have communicated with Bethesda regarding our planned method to implement the voice acting and other audio from Fallout 3 Into the Capital Wasteland. During this Conversation it became clear our planned approach would raise some serious red flags that we had unfortunately not foreseen.”

The issue is that ripping the original voice files from Fallout 3 for the mod would breach on Bethesda's copyright. Bethesda had not yet sent any cease and desist letters or filed any copyright claims against the modders, and the team didn't want to keep going knowing that this would be the likely outcome.

The group could have recording their own voice acting to fill in and circumvent copyright issues. However, they decided that replacing the original voice acting, or removing it entirely, would cause the game to lose some of its charm.

Original Story (27/02/18): We are no strangers to total conversion mods when it comes to Bethesda games. We've seen modders remake Oblivion and Morrowind in Skyrim, Fallout 1 brought back in New Vegas and now a group of modders are tackling the idea of rebuilding Fallout 3 as a mod for Fallout 4.

Fallout 3 is turning ten years old this year, so a group of modders known as ‘Road to Liberty' have launched ‘Project Capital Wasteland'. The idea is to remake the entirety of Fallout 3 within Fallout 4. So far, the team has released some footage of how the underground metro system looks in Fallout 4's updated version of the Creation Engine.

There are also a bunch of screenshots currently available, showing that the team is already making good progress bringing this mod to life:

The group is still seeking volunteers, including 3D and 2D artists to help create assets. A project this big will no doubt take plenty of time to reach completion, but we'll be eagerly following it.

KitGuru Says: I've always loved total conversion mods, from the days of installing Dragonball Z and Stargate mods on Half-Life 2, right up until now. I also happen to generally prefer Fallout 3 to Fallout 4, so I'm looking forward to checking this mod out once it is all finished. What do you guys think of project capital wasteland? Is this something you'll be installing later down the line?
