The movie about perhaps the world's most well known MMO, World of Warcraft, has been in the very early stages of development for over six years. However, it may finally be beginning to grind forward on its fantasy gears, as it now has a new director assigned to it, the man behind such titles as Moon and Source Code, Duncan Jones.
The writer for the project is said to be Charles Leavitt, the man who wrote Blood Diamond – so there's some pedigree there too.
The HollyWood reporter has it that filming is expected to take place towards the end of 2013, with a release date tentatively penned for 2015. Whether it will be a live action affair or a CGI romp is unknown at this point, but we heard from Blizzard back in 2006 that it thought a big budget would help push development along – something to the tune of $100 million.
Since the announcement Jones has tweeted about his receiving the position of director, without spelling out which movie:
So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now! 😉

KitGuru Says: So it looks like we'll finally get to see a movie version of Azeroth. There's certainly been some big stories that could be covered since the world came into existence. You WoW players, what would you like to see happen in the movie, CGI or no?
