PS4 outselling the Xbox One by almost double

Sony executives will be happy to hear this news so early on in the year. According to a report from market advisory group, NPD Group, while overall software sales are a little down for January year on year, Microsoftt and Sony are selling a lot of hardware – though the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by almost twice as much.

“PS4 led overall hardware sales this month, followed by the Xbox One,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan in the report (via Venturebeat). Software sales are higher on the Sony system too, with all games in the top ten – apart from Call of Duty: Ghosts and Lego Marvel Super Heroes – selling more on the PS4 than on the Xbox One. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was one of them, selling twice as many copies on the PS4 .

However this doesn't mean Microsoft isn't selling systems, far from it. Both are in-fact selling very well and really it's only Nintendo which is struggling at the moment. Xbox 360s are still flying out the door too, along with a lot of software for the last-gen console, leading Microsoft to try and save face by suggesting that combined, the Xbox One and Xbox 360 are responsible for a majority of all game software sales.

There can be only one

The reason the last-gen systems are no doubt still selling well, is because some games in the top 10, simply aren't available on the Xbox One or PS4, yet. Titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft (which feature fifth and seventh for overall games sales in  January) are two good examples.

Kitguru Says: While Microsoft fans may cry foul, based on the way the Xbox One was introduced last year, this is the way the latest round of console releases was expected to go.
