Steam no longer supports Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1

If you're still using a system with Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to play Steam titles, we have bad news for you. Valve has recently announced that Steam will no longer support those systems. While this decision was already communicated earlier, the company has now officially confirmed it.

Although some still use Windows 7 and 8/8.1, we must remember that these operating systems were released over ten years ago. So, it's understandable that Valve doesn't have plans for Steam to support these versions. Users still running Steam on these older operating systems can continue using the current software. Still, it's important to note that they will no longer receive security updates or technical assistance from Steam, putting them at a higher risk of vulnerability.

This decision was taken because there are essential Steam functionalities that depend on an embedded version of Google Chrome that no longer works on earlier versions of Windows. Moreover, future versions of Steam will need Windows features and security upgrades that are only available in Windows 10 and later.

Valve recommends upgrading to the latest versions of Windows, emphasising Windows 10 and 11. Alternatively, gamers can consider using a Linux-based OS. Regardless of your choice, updating your operating system is always essential to ensure security and compatibility with the latest software.
