Sega reveals Mega Drive Mini 2 with Mega CD compatibility and 50 games

If you're a retro game fan, we have some interesting news to share. Sega will launch a new Mega Drive Mini, this time packing a total of 50 titles and support for Mega CD.

The new mini-console was announced during a Sega live stream, although as we've seen in the past with mini-console releases, the included games in Japan can differ to other parts of the world.

Sega has confirmed 11 of the 50 games coming with the console so far, including:

  • Silpheed (Mega CD)
  • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  • Sonic CD (Mega CD)
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  • Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  • Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
  • Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
  • Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
  • Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
  • Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
  • Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive port)

Note that the Fantasy Zone in this list is actually an original for the Mega Drive. Supposedly, Sega is porting its sequel, Super Fantasy Zone, launched for the Sega Master System, and renaming it. Moreover, the Japanese company also promised more arcade ports, including a “mysterious new work”.

The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 will be available starting October 27th in Japan for ¥9,980 (£61). Release dates outside of Japan have yet to be announced.
