Okami is getting a sequel directed by Hideki Kamiya

A sequel to Okami is officially in development, with legendary game director Hideki Kamiya (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and the original Okami) at the helm. The exciting announcement was made at The Game Awards 2024, accompanied by a stunning teaser trailer that showcased the beloved franchise's signature art style.

While brief and lacking in gameplay footage, the trailer offered various hints, including a glimpse of a white wolf sprinting through landscapes and a fleeting appearance of the iconic Celestial Brush. The Celestial Brush, a core gameplay mechanic in the original Okami, allows players to draw on the screen to interact with the world, solve puzzles, and defeat enemies. Its presence in the teaser suggests that this unique feature might return in the sequel.

The original Okami, released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, was a critical and commercial success, praised for its distinctive art style, engaging gameplay, and captivating story. It has since been ported to various platforms, including a recent HD remaster for the Nintendo Switch. The sequel is being co-developed by a team of veteran developers from various studios, including M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and Clovers Inc., Kamiya's newly formed company.

While details about the sequel's story, gameplay, and release date remain scarce, the announcement alone is enough to make fans of Okami glad that they might see Amaterasu once again.
