Gigantic is making a comeback six years after shutting down

When Motiga announced the shutdown of Gigantic, a MOBA-hero shooter hybrid, less than a year after its release, the developer claimed the game didn't resonate with the players. But now, with the upcoming release of Gigantic: Rampage Edition in 2024, the game is set to make a comeback. This time, it will be a paid game and will not feature the original's continuous live-service objectives.

The new and improved version of Gigantic will be launched on April 9th with new content, game modes, heroes, and maps. Unlike the original game, which was exclusive to PC and Xbox One, the Rampage Edition will be published on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Abstraction Games, a Netherlands-based company, is responsible for reviving the game after spending time as a support studio on projects like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

Gigantic: Rampage Edition will retain the original's gameplay style, in which two teams of five heroes with upgradable skills compete in a power race by dominating objectives and killing enemies to defeat the enemy team's Guardian.

The game will also introduce two new heroes, Roland and Kajir, to the pre-existing roster of 23 Gigantic heroes. Additionally, there will be two new levels, Picaro Bay and Heaven's Ward, and a new Rush Mode that promises to offer a streamlined Gigantic experience that is more accessible, fast-paced, and action-packed. Moreover, it will feature crossplay across all platforms, a new ranking system, QoL improvements, and unused content from the original creators, Motiga.

Players can expect additional cosmetics to complement each hero's unique look, which will be available for free and earned via in-game currency. Abstraction plans to rotate seasons with cosmetic prizes and balance improvements as required.

To commemorate the relaunch of Gigantic, there's an ongoing closed beta test for those who played the throwback event last year. If you didn't participate and don't have an invite, you can request access to the playtest starting February 22nd on the game's Steam page. The full release is scheduled for April 9th and will cost $19.99.

Kitguru says: Overall, Gigantic: Rampage Edition seems to be a promising revival of an underrated game that deserves a second chance. However, with most popular MOBAs being free to play, it will be interesting to see how well Gigantic is received as a paid game.
