Basemark launches new ‘Breaking Limit’ cross-platform gaming benchmark

Basemark has announced the launch of its latest benchmarking software, Breaking Limit. Targeting a wide range of devices, this new benchmark software is suitable for testing smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops (lower-end). For higher-end devices, Basemark also launched Breaking Limit Ultra, 

Breaking Limit comes in two versions: a standard edition for mobile devices and lower-end systems and an Ultra edition specifically designed for desktops and high-performance laptops. One key difference between the standard and Ultra versions is the rendering resolution; the former renders in 1080p, while the latter renders at 4K.

Both versions of Breaking Limit make use of ray-tracing technology. The benchmarks feature ray-traced reflections and shadows, with the Ultra edition taking it a step further by incorporating ray-traced reflections, real-world ambient occlusion, volumetric fog, motion blur, and temporal anti-aliasing.

Moreover, Basemark has integrated support for upscaling tests by including Nvidia DLSS 2 and AMD FSR 2 in the Ultra benchmark. It's worth noting that both upscaling technologies are set to “Balanced” quality, but direct comparison of results may not be accurate due to differences in quality and rendering methodologies.

The official system requirements for both versions of the benchmark can be found below:

Breaking Limit

  • Operating systems: Windows, Linux, iOS and Android
  • Graphics API's (depending on operating system): DirectX12, Vulkan1.3, and Metal 3
  • Ray tracing capable GPU

Breaking Limit Ultra

  • Windows devices:
    • x64 CPU
    • Windows 10 or 11
    • 8GB of RAM
    • Ray tracing-capable GPU with 8GB+ of VRAM
  • Linux devices:
    • x64 CPU
    • Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04 (other distributions may be supported, but are not tested)
    • 8GB+ of RAM
    • Ray tracing-capable GPU with 8GB+ of VRAM

The benchmark is compatible with Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS operating systems and supports three graphics APIs: DirectX12, Vulkan, and Metal. While Basemark has not confirmed the release date nor pricing, Breaking Limit will likely be offered as a free benchmarking tool, as has been the case with Basemark's previous releases.
