Amazon signed a publishing agreement with Smilegate RPG

Amazon has partnered with Smilegate RPG to publish a new game in North America and Europe. The game hasn't been announced yet, but it's scheduled to release in 2021, and based on Smilegate RPG's portfolio, there's a chance that it will be Lost Ark.

Smilegate RPG is known for developing the Crossfire FPS and the Lost Ark MMORPG. For those who don't know, Crossfire is the “world’s largest first-person online shooter game” with 670 million registered users and over 8 million players worldwide. Besides Crossfire, the Smilegate studio has developed multiple other games for the PC and mobile platforms across a variety of genres such as FPS, MMORPG, action and sports. The Korean studio is spread across the world with offices in the US, China, Southeast Asia, and Spain.

Lost Ark is a Korean MMORPG that it's available in multiple Asian countries, and Russia. It's said that with this agreement, Amazon might become the publisher of the game In the US and Europe. This game has been seen by many as a rival to the likes of Diablo III and other online ARPGs. When the game release in Korea, there were a lot of people playing the game through VPNs (to play Lost Ark KR you need a registered Korean phone number and IP). There is definitely a lot of excitement around Lost Ark, and Amazon might be the one taking advantage of it.

Christoph Hartmann, vice president at Amazon Games, stated that the company is focusing on offering “the most engaging game experiences” from both its internal teams and external studios. With Smilegate history of “big games that players love”, Amazon plans to bring to its customers the “type of best-in-class, living, growing online games” that the studio has developed studio until now.

Chi Won Gil, CEO of Smilegate RPG, said that Amazon Games is “uniquely positioned as a publisher” because of its vast publishing resources and channels – Twitch, Prime Gaming, AWS, and more – and its customer-centric company philosophy.

Amazon has already launched Crucible, who has been taken back to the alpha phase for additional polishing. Additionally, it plans to launch the New World MMORPG in Spring 2021, an “original AAA online game based on the literary works of The Lord of the Rings”, and other unannounced projects.
