Twitch Plays is attempting the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate campaign

The Twitch Plays community has achieved some staggering feats, beating multiple games including Dark Souls by using commands in Twitch’s chat box to control the character on screen. Now, the community has gathered together to tackle Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s World of Light campaign.

Twitch Plays Pokémon popularised the community-controlled format back in 2014, with its 1,165,140 participants earning the social experiment a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. This continued onto a number of other games, such as Halo and even Dark Souls, each of which were eventually bested. It has also spawned a number of homages, transforming ‘Twitch Plays’ into somewhat of a genre as well as an official channel.

CommunityController is a channel that has fully embraced this emerging genre, with GBAtemp user Sasori challenging people to “complete the World of Light and maybe even unlock all of the characters” in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sasori is keeping a close eye on the feedback of the community, including adding, removing and modifying commands, also making the code available on their GitHub.

Traversing the World of Light has been a difficult task so far in the fast-paced fighter, with the community managing to best a handful of fighters over the past four days. They are truly adapting however, making firm use of the “menu” command to pause the game and give the group of players a chance to think and synchronise. During my time watching, I even saw the community take Mario into training.

Overall, players seem a little frustrated that simple commands such as “left” and “right” activate taunts on the D-Pad rather than directing the character, but these are minor gripes from those that haven’t read the command list. If you think you have what it takes, head on over to the channel.

KitGuru Says: There’s a long way to go, but do you think that players will be able to unlock all 74 fighters? How about being able to best the World of Light? I mean, Twitch Plays did manage to beat Dark Souls, after all.
