New Kingdom Hearts III trailer takes players into the world of Monsters Inc.

After a long 12-year wait since its predecessor, Kingdom Hearts III is due at some point this year. The D23 Expo in Japan unfortunately didn’t narrow its window of release, however it did give us a first look at its new theme music from returning singer Hikaru Utada and an extended trailer showcasing the world of Monsters Inc.

Last year, we found out that Kingdom Hearts protagonist Sora and friends would be traveling to the world of Toy Story to meet Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang. Now, it seems that our heroes will also be making a trip to Monsters Inc in their very own fiendish forms as a new trailer shows their first encounter with Sully, Mike Wazowski and Boo.

Other mainstay characters show up such as villainous Vanitas and Marluxia as well as deuteragonist Riku. Rapunzel also makes an appearance, as does Tangled’s Flynn Rider and The Little Mermaid’s Ariel as a summon.

Alongside the 4-minute trailer, Square Enix debuted the Hikaru Utada’s new theme song for Kingdom Hearts III, called “Don’t Think Twice”. Fan reception in the West has been mixed in comparison to Utada’s beloved previous iterations, with “Simple and Clean” (“Hikari” in Japanese) for the first Kingdom Hearts and “Sanctuary” for Kingdom Hearts II.

Kingdom Hearts III is due out sometime this year for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

KitGuru Says: Kingdom Hearts III is going to have a task on its hands with the amount of expectation that’s been built up over the past decade. Luckily, the game looks like it is shaping up nicely despite the showcase still being a work-in-progress. Are you excited for the next Kingdom Hearts? What characters would you like to see make their way to the Final Fantasy/Disney crossover?
