The new 'Dead Silence Kaveri Gaming Battlerig' from UK system builder Falcon Computers looks set to fit the bill. This system features the latest AMD A10 7850K APU, built inside the diminutive, award winning Aerocool Dead Silence chassis. Falcon computers are currently selling three different specified Kaveri systems which you can see over here. We received the most expensive KV3 version, which is priced at £599.99 inc vat. Falcon Computer have a £50 price cut running as we go to publication, so you can pick it up for £549.99 inc vat. Falcon Computers ship their system inside the Dead Silence box with some bubblewrap and black bin bag material to protect it during shipping. They might be wiser moving to a 'double box' system like their competitors, however there was thankfully no damage caused. I was surprised to see no discs or spare cables supplied in the box either, although I am not sure if this is because we received a 'review sample'. We all know how good the Aerocool Dead Silence Gaming Cube is - we have reviewed it in depth before. This is actually the first time I have had a 'hands on' with one myself and I am very impressed with the build quality and styling. It is a beautiful little chassis and it surely ranks up there with the Bitfenix Prodigy. No Falcon Computer branding on the front of the Dead Silence chassis, just an Aerocool logo alongside an AMD A Series Black Edition sticker. There are four USB ports at the top of the case - two USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports. Along the left are power, reset buttons and a microphone and headphone jack. The Aerocool Dead Silence Gaming Cube doors are easily removed with thumbscrews. Inside we see the ASUS A88XMPLUS FM2+ motherboard, ADATA 2,133mhz memory, 1TB SEAGATE hard drive and Cooler Master power supply. Sadly there is no SSD in this build, but it would increase the retail price. There is no discrete graphics card in this build, although you could add one later if you wanted. This system uses the GPU aspect of the AMD A10 7850K APU. System validation is available here. The build quality is excellent, with most of the cables routed out of the way, not an easy task considering the windowed panel. Flipping the case around, we can see the other side of the build. Most of the power cables are hidden out of sight underneath the tray which is home to the motherboard. On this page we present some super high resolution images of the product taken with the 24.5MP Nikon D3X camera and 24-70mm ED lens. It is designed to test the performance of all types of PC, from tablets to desktops. The overall score of 3,277 shows decent overall performance, however without a Solid State Drive some of the benchmark results are lower than we would like to see. Futuremark released 3DMark Vantage, on April 28, 2008. It is a benchmark based upon DirectX 10, and therefore will only run under Windows Vista (Service Pack 1 is stated as a requirement) and Windows 7. This is the first edition where the feature-restricted, free of charge version could not be used any number of times. 1280×1024 resolution was used with performance settings. This test result shows that the Kaveri A10 7850K is surprisingly capable for an all in one solution, and the score indicates that it should handle most of the older Direct X 10 titles at 1080p (without AA anyway). 3DMark 11 is designed for testing DirectX 11 hardware running on Windows 7 and Windows Vista the benchmark includes six all new benchmark tests that make extensive use of all the new features in DirectX 11 including tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading. For our testing today we are converting a 4.4GB 720p MKV file (1h:58mins) to Apple Mp4 format for playback on a portable device. This is a common procedure for many people and will give a good indication of system power. Hardware acceleration is enabled. The Dead Silence Kaveri Gaming Battlerig completes the test in 13 minutes and 48 seconds. The fastest Core i7 systems will complete this same test in around 7 minutes. The slowest Intel Atom systems will take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Crystalmark is a useful benchmark to measure theoretical performance levels of hard drives and SSD’s. We are using V3.0 x64. Performance of the mechanical hard drive is about as good as we could expect, scoring around 195 MB/s and 177 MB/s in the sequential read and write test, respectively. The ATTO Disk Benchmark performance measurement tool is compatible with Microsoft Windows. Measure your storage systems performance with various transfer sizes and test lengths for reads and writes. Several options are available to customize your performance measurement including queue depth, overlapped I/O and even a comparison mode with the option to run continuously. Use ATTO Disk Benchmark to test any manufacturers RAID controllers, storage controllers, host adapters, hard drives and SSD drives and notice that ATTO products will consistently provide the highest level of performance to your storage. The impressive scores are mirrored in ATTO, hitting over 200 MB/s peak rates. In real world terms however, we knew immediately that this system wasn't using a Solid State Drive. If you are lucky to already own a new Solid State Drive you will know what I mean - overall system performance can be sluggish without one, even with a cutting edge Core i7 processor. The Falcon Kaveri system takes around 35 seconds to boot up and become responsive and some programs can take a while to load. We do appreciate that adding a Solid State Drive to this build would have increased the retail price for Falcon, but if I owned this system myself I really would feel the need to add one, improving boot times and overall system responsiveness. To test the USB 3.0 capabilities of the Asus Z87-A motherboard, we use one of the fastest drives we have – the Patriot SuperSonic Magnum 256GB. We reviewed this way back in February last year. Performance from the USB 3.0 ports is impressive, almost hitting 300 MB/s in the sequential read test. Peaks around 270 MB/s in the read test, close to the performance in CrystalDiskMark. Tomb Raider received much acclaim from critics, who praised the graphics, the gameplay and Camilla Luddington’s performance as Lara with many critics agreeing that the game is a solid and much needed reboot of the franchise. Much criticism went to the addition of the multiplayer which many felt was unnecessary. We tested both at 720p and 1080p settings. At 1280x720 we selected the 'high' quality preset. At these image quality settings the frame rates dropped too much at 1920x1080, so we selected the 'normal' preset. The AMD Kaveri A10 7850k is perfectly capable powering this engine at 720p with the modest 'high' quality preset, dropping below 30 frames per second only once in our test environment. At 1920x1080 however the frame rate suffers, dropping below the sweet spot of 25 a couple of times. Grid 2 is the sequel to the racing video game Race Driver: Grid. It was developed and published by Codemasters. The game includes numerous real world locations such as Paris, numerous United States locations, and many more, and also includes motor vehicles spanning four decades. In addition, it includes a new handling system that developer Codemasters has dubbed ‘TrueFeel’, which aims to hit a sweet spot between realism and accessibility. We tested the GRID 2 engine at both 720p and 1080p. At both resolutions we selected the HIGH preset. At 1280x720 we enabled 2AA, but disabled anti aliasing completely at 1920x1080. Excellent results - showing that GRID 2 was playable at both resolutions. The game is smooth throughout. Total War ROME 2 is the eighth stand alone game in the Total War series, it is the successor to the successful Rome: Total War title. The Warscape Engine powers the visuals of the game and the new unit cameras will allow players to focus on individual soldiers on the battlefield, which in itself may contain thousands of combatants at a time. Creative Assembly has stated that they wish to bring out the more human side of war this way, with soldiers reacting with horror as their comrades get killed around them and officers inspiring their men with heroic speeches before siege towers hit the walls of the enemy city. This will be realised using facial animations for individual units, adding a feel of horror and realism to the battles. We selected 1280x720 resolution with the 'high' and 'very high' preset, shown above. The Very High setting proves too much for the modest hardware, dropping the frame rate below 25 frequently. The 'High' setting works out much better, maintaining a 30+ frame rate at all times - although you lose general graphic detail in the environments and units. The tests were performed in a controlled air conditioned room with temperatures maintained at a constant 23c – a comfortable environment for the majority of people reading this.Idle temperatures were measured after sitting at the desktop for 30 minutes. Load measurements were acquired by playing Tomb Raider 2014 for 60 minutes and measuring the peak temperature. The system is relatively cool running at all times, even under extended load. Ambient noise in the room is around 20-25dBa. We measure from a distance of around 1 meter from the closed chassis and 4 foot from the ground to mirror a real world situation. Why do this? Well this means we can eliminate secondary noise pollution in the test room and concentrate on only the video card. It also brings us slightly closer to industry standards, such as DIN 45635. At idle it is basically 'silent', and when the CPU fan spins up, it peaks just under 33 dBa. This makes it ideal for a living room or bedroom environment. We measure the system power consumption at the wall - not factoring in the monitor. We test when idle - then when loading with Cinebench R15 and Tomb Raider 2014. At idle, the whole system only consumes 40 watts of power. When all cores are loaded 100% in Cinebench this rises to 108 watts. When playing the 2014 iteration of Tomb Raider, the power consumption fluctuates between 85 watts and 113 watts. We took the average over the course of 5 minutes - which was 97 watts. Many people might expect this to be higher than the Cinebench reading, but the four cores are running at 100% load when Tomb Raider is running. Falcon Computers have created a full range of AMD A10 7850K powered systems, and the Dead Silence Kaveri Gaming Battlerig we received for review slots in at the top of this specific range. It will appeal to the casual gamer who wants a low cost, quiet system for placement in a living room or bedroom. There is no doubt that the new Kaveri A10 7850K is an excellent processor and in gaming terms a marked improvement on AMD's last generation models. The A10 7850K integrated graphics delivers surprisingly capable frame rates, able to power current Direct X 11 titles with reasonable image quality settings at 720p. You will even get away with DX11 1080p, if you are happy lowering IQ and running without anti aliasing. The goal of Falcon computers was clearly to build a quiet, petite little system that would be capable of handling office and media duties and high definition gaming via a television set. Without a discrete graphics card, it demands minimal power at the socket, runs cooler while generating less noise. In this regard Falcon can consider The Kaveri Dead Silence Battlerig a complete success. I have to admit I have been surprised that AMD are charging so much for the A10 7850K. It retails at £139.99 inc vat in the UK today. The Intel Core i5 4670k is only £30 more expensive and delivers greater raw CPU performance. For a gamer working with a slightly greater budget, a 4670K and entry level discrete card would be a better option. The Dead Silence Kaveri Gaming BattleRig is undoubtedly an excellent purchase. We love the Aerocool Dead Silence Cube case - it is almost silent, and looks fantastic. This is a very quiet running card, and it would massively increase the gaming frame rate prowess at 1920x1080 - ideal for pairing up with a high definition 1080p television set. The biggest weakness of the review system we received today, was the lack of solid state drive. It was immediately noticeable and one area that many people overlook. Thankfully Falcon Computers have the option to add one. If you are working to a tight budget, then we would recommend the addition of a Seagate Hybrid 1TB/8GB SSD.
