You can explore Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Galar region on your PC, smartphones, and tablets

While you may not be able to legally play Pokémon games on your PC, soon you’ll be able to explore one of the biggest and newest features from the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Unveiled by Famitsu, “Pokémon Wild Area Search” is an upcoming, limited time web app that will be available on PC, Mac, smartphones, and tablets. The web app will allow you to explore the wild area – a large open field set in the Galar region of the upcoming Pokémon games.

The wild area will be explorable as a diorama, with a 360-degree camera allowing you to look all around you. The full extent of Pokémon Wild Area Search is currently unknown, but what has been confirmed is that you’ll be able to encounter certain Pokemon in the area, represented by CG models.

As of right now, the web app will only be available in Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, although languages may be expanded in the future. Pokémon Wild Area Search will be available from early November, and will conclude on the 31st of December.

Nintendo’s decision to allow a core feature of one of its most anticipated and protected IPs to be available on a non-Nintendo platform is certainly a surprising one. Perhaps this is the shape of things to come. Nintendo’s renewed focus on the mobile market, followed by this, means that everyone can now enjoy Nintendo’s rich library of IPs – even if it’s only in a small way.
