Valve launches new real-time and weekly Steam charts

As a video game platform, Steam has been one of the most open in the industry, giving players a great deal of data thanks to open APIs and general sense of transparency. The platform holder has now taken this one step further, announcing the launch of real-time and weekly Steam charts.

Making the announcement, Valve said “Today we've launched a new section of Steam dedicated to ranking the most popular games on Steam. This new section includes real-time charts for top selling and most played games, as well as weekly top sellers and monthly top new releases.”

Replacing the old stats page, this newly revamped service ranks the games “based on total revenue, including all sources such as DLC and in-game transactions so we can all get a more complete picture of which games players are excited about getting into and continuing to play”. This collation of data will also be used to rank the Top Sellers tab on Steam's homepage, genre and tag pages.

This newly revamped service includes all the data you could ever want, such as a charts overview page; Steam hardware survey; download stats; customer support stats; real-time top sellers; number of weeks on chart; weekly change in rank; region switcher; total revenue; real-time most played; weekly top sellers' charts and monthly top new releases.

For years we have had third-party services offer insight into Steam and its games. Seeing Valve itself not only launch its own version but doing so in a way which offers this much information is welcome indeed, and continues to prove that the platform is by far one of the most open within a mostly closed off industry. Hopefully more platforms follow suit.
