Steam’s PlayStation controller support goes live

For those who wish to play PC games using a controller, Microsoft’s Xbox peripheral has historically been the go-to accessory – with many PC titles outright not supporting PlayStation controllers (at least not without 3rd-party software). Finally, those using a PlayStation controller can now see exactly what games support their peripherals.

Following the announcement back in September that Steam would soon start to inform users on which games support the DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, the functionality is now live, with Valve taking to their blog to say:

“Steam has long made it easy to find games that have great support for Xbox controllers. Today's Steam update expands on that foundation to help the millions of players with PlayStation's DualShock and DualSense controllers easily find games to play with those devices.”

This latest update introduces a number of new menus and pop-ups which lets players know the exact extent of their controller’s support with particular games. Some of the added functions include:

  • An upgraded controller-friendly hub
  • Store pages now display supported controller types
  • Store search filters
  • New compatibility section in your library
  • Controller configuration button
  • New library filters

As someone who plays on PC using a DualSense controller, it is highly exciting to see this new level of transparency, meaning that players will be able to utilise the controller’s unique features (adaptive triggers, haptics) with games that support it much more clearly. Hopefully the list of DualSense-supported titles increases exponentially over the coming months and years.
