PC ports of PlayStation titles will launch 2-3 years after initial release

With the PS5 generation, we have seen Sony take an interest in the PC gaming space, having ported a number of PlayStation exclusives to the platform in recent years. That said, unlike Microsoft, there has been an extended lag between when a game launches on PlayStation and its eventual PC release. Now, SIE CEO Jim Ryan has claimed that PC ports will release 2-3 years after their launch on PS5.

Taking part in an interview conducted by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (and translated by Google), Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO Jim Ryan spoke on a number of topics including the importance of the Japanese market to Sony, Spider-Man 2’s development and the future of PlayStation VR2.

Alongside these, Ryan was asked about porting PlayStation games to PC, to which he responded: “Yes, we will be proactive,” adding that “We also fully understand the importance of PS5 exclusive titles. As I mentioned earlier, PlayStation Studios' main responsibility is to have people enjoy the game experience using the latest PS. We are increasing the number of PS5-exclusive titles and staggering the release of the PC version.”

Ryan continued, “I often have the opportunity to ask game fans for their opinions, and when I ask them about the time lag, they say that selling the PC version two or three years after the release of the PS version is accepted favourably.”

In the past, the time between a Sony-published title’s launch on PlayStation and PC has been somewhat inconsistent. Horizon Zero Dawn took 3 and a half years to come to PC, while PS5 exclusive Returnal arrived on PC less than 2 years following its initial launch. Regardless of how long it takes, it is exciting to see Sony continuing to slowly but surely bring its back catalogue of games to the PC market.
