Leading PS3 emulator hits new massive milestone

Just over one year ago in October 2021 we reported that the leading PlayStation 3 emulator, RPCS3, had hit an impressive technological milestone: with every single PS3 game now at least loadable to some degree. One year later and the team have hit their next major goal – with 100% of all games now launching to the main menu at the very least.

Making this exciting announcement on Twitter, the RPCS3 team said “We are delighted to announce that as of today, the RPCS3 Loadable compatibility category has reached 0 GAMES!”

Explaining this further, they continued, “This means there are no PS3 games left that boot to a black screen on the emulator – every PS3 game at the very least boots and shows image output. Happy holidays!”

For the uninitiated, RPCS3 as an emulator has 5 levels of compatibility: Nothing, Loadable, Intro, Ingame and Playable. As mentioned, Last year in October the team had announced that all PS3 games ever released at least reached the second stage of compatibility (Loadable). With this latest update, the games have managed to go up a level, meaning we are getting closer and closer to perfect emulation of what was a highly complex and bespoke console hardware-wise.

It will be interesting and exciting to see how long it takes for the team to make every single title ‘Ingame’ – though considering just 3.42% of games are not able to achieve this currently, it could be sooner than expected.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this achievement? Have you used RPCS3 before? What game would you use it to emulate? Let us know down below.
