Gears of War rumoured to be getting the Master Chief Collection treatment

Remastering older titles to bring them up to modern standards is a common practice, especially with bigger franchises. Such was the case with the Halo Master Chief Collection. Following its success, it looks like Micorosft is preparing another ambitious remaster.

During the most recent episode of the XboxEra podcast, industry insider Shpeshal Nick claimed that “there is another Microsoft franchise – I'm not allowed to say the franchise – there is another Microsoft franchise that will be getting the Master Chief Collection treatment; is probably the best way to describe it.”

There are a few major Xbox franchises which Nick could be alluding to, however, The Verge’s senior editor Tom Warren (who seemingly is not afraid to reveal the franchise) responded to the rumour saying “the gears are really turning on this rumor,” all but confirming that the franchise in question is gears of War.

Released back in 2014, the Halo Master Chief Collection collated all previous mainline Halo entries into one collection with each game seeing significant remasters. While an ambitious project (and one that initially suffered from a number of issues), the Master Chief Collection is now by far the best way to experience the full Halo story.

Gears of War getting a similar treatment makes a great deal of sense, especially as the franchise remains one of Microsoft’s biggest (at least when it comes to OG Microsoft studios and IPs). Furthermore, while the first Gears game did receive a remaster in the form of the Gears of War Ultimate Edition, the game’s early sequels are trapped on the Xbox 360 (though of course available through backwards compatibility).

If Microsoft is indeed creating a MCC-styled remaster for the Gears franchise, hopefully this means that PC players will finally be able to experience the full Gears story, including Gears of War 2, 3 and Judgement. While no timeline was given by Nick, hopefully it is announced sooner rather than later – though without the many issues that the Master Chief Collection saw.
