Dark Souls II PC servers finally come back online

All the way back in early 2022, the PC servers for a number of Dark Souls titles were taken down due to a major exploit in the system which could allow for one’s PC to be remotely accessed by others. Following the return of the PC servers for Dark Souls 3, its predecessor is now also back online.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Dark Souls account said “Online features for the PC version of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (DX11) have been reactivated. Online features for the base version of #DarkSouls II for PC (DX9) will be made available at a later date. Our thanks for your continued patience and support.”

The team also offered an update on the servers for the first Dark Souls, saying “Work on the restoration of online services for the PC version of Dark Souls Remastered is still underway, and we will inform you when they return. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.”

Unfortunately, the original release of Dark Souls – the Prepare to Die Edition – will not ever have its servers turned back online, with the team explaining “We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system. We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter.”

The exploit found within the Dark Souls titles was quite serious, and so as frustrating as it may have been for fans of these games, time was needed in order to ensure that such an exploit cannot happen again. That being said, it is sad to see the OG Dark Souls release going offline permanently.
