343i is “internally exploring” adding microtransactions to Halo: MCC

Ever since Bungie parted ways with Microsoft to work on Destiny, 343 Industries have been in charge of the Halo franchise – to varying levels of success. The latest controversy comes from the team’s most recent community update, where they announced that the team is “internally exploring” the notion of adding microtransactions into Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

As part of the latest Halo community update blog, Alex Wakeford of 343i discussed the team’s move away from Seasons, saying “what has previously been named “Season Points”—points earned by completing challenges and levelling up to unlock items—will eventually be renamed “Spartan Points” in a future update.”

Explaining this change further, Wakeford claimed that “For players who are new to the [Halo Master chief Collection], or who may not have dedicated much time specifically to unlocking items during the seasonal updates, or are simply completionists looking to catch the last outstanding items they need, we are internally exploring a potential new feature for the future in the form of purchasable Spartan Points.”

343i did make an attempt to calm any concerns from fans, saying “It is prudent to note here that we are happy with the current system of how players earn Spartan Points, by completing challenges and levelling up through play. This would be an optional, additive alternative for players who might find the vast scope of content to be an intimidating amount of playtime and want to get ahead on (or skip) the grind, or maybe want to grab specific items they want.”

It is interesting to see the team specifically talk about skipping the grind, especially as The Master Chief Collection itself has suffered from progression issues as a consequence of 343i intentionally slowing down the rate of Season Points acquisitions over time. It will be interesting to see whether the team does indeed end up adding these new purchasable Spartan Points. The full blog post can be found HERE.
