Intel has used the same design for the NUC Extreme Compute Element for some time, but a new photo suggests some radical changes will be in place for the upcoming Raptor Lake-based NUX 13 Extreme.
A leaked roadmap shared over a month ago suggested Raptor Canyon, Intel's next-gen NUC, would have a 13.9-litre capacity (vs Dragon Canyon's 8-litre), PCIe x16 support and Core i9, i7, and i5 CPU options. Besides the new NUC system, the roadmap also listed that “Shrike Bay” (aka NUC 13 Extreme Compute Element) would release alongside the new system. This compute element would pack up to a Core i9 K or KF series processor.

Despite the new specifications, it was never suggested the compute element would look different, but a photo shared by @momomo_us shows a major redesign. Not only will the NUC 13 Extreme be bigger and longer, but the cooling solution also seems quite different. The image also shows the NUC 13 Extreme Compute Element will have 2x DIMM slots for memory, an upgrade over its predecessors that used SO-DIMM slots. It's unclear if the system will support DDR5 memory.
According to the leaked roadmap, the NUC 13 and respective compute element will release in mid-Q4 2022. The GPU equipped on these systems is still unknown, but we'll most likely see them shipping with Arc Alchemist graphics.
