3DMark results:
For this test, we ran the MSI GT75 Titan 8RG through Time Spy Extreme, Time Spy, Fire Strike, Fire Strike Extreme and Fire Strike Ultra. The laptop was plugged in and the power mode was set to ‘turbo' and ‘best performance' for the duration of the tests. We first look at the overall scores given at the end of each test.
The scores are very impressive. Most of the benchmarks see this laptop sitting in the top 30% of results and out-performing many high end desktop PCs.
The below graph shows the individual results for the GPU and CPU:
The processor achieves some very high and consistent physics scores during the Fire Strike benchmarks, and continues to score well in CPU tests during the Time Spy benchmarks. The i9-8950HK is certainly overkill for gaming and the main performance benefit will show when it comes to video editing and rendering.
The GTX 1080 also continues to be an excellent performer, particularly in the 1080p tests. It should be able to take full advantage of the 120hz refresh rate on the MSI GT75 Titan when we get to gaming benchmarks.
Gaming performance:
We used the MSI GT75 Titan 8RG to play 3 different popular and graphically demanding games to see just how powerful this laptop is when it comes to gaming. The laptop had the charger connected and the power options set to ‘turbo' and ‘best performance'.
All the games were tested at 1920×1080 resolution with different image quality settings. We chose to use High and Ultra (where available) for the tests to really push the GTX 1080 and see if it could still make the most of the 120Hz screen when gaming with the image quality cranked right up.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is an action adventure game with many different environments and immersive landscapes making it a useful way to test this laptop's gaming performance. Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn't have an ultra setting so we opted to use the very high setting. We also include screenshots of the results from the in-game benchmark.
Far Cry 5 is the most recent release we tested on this laptop. The gigantic open world of Hope County has plenty of beautiful scenery to test how well this laptop performs with a brand new AAA game. We also include screenshots of the benchmark results.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is another game with a superb open world environment. The beautiful scenery of mountains, forests and deserts requires a lot of GPU power to render making it very demanding game that is perfect for testing this laptop’s gaming performance. We have also included screenshots of this game's very handy in-built benchmark.
Rise of the Tomb Raider and Far Cry 5 ran beautifully on this laptop. In both games, even with maximum settings, the MSI GT75 Titan could take full advantage of the 120Hz screen. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands proved more demanding with ultra settings, but this laptop could still get a good average of nearly 60fps there, while at high settings the fps barely dipped below 100.
Overall the MSI GT75 Titan 8RG with its GTX 1080 is a very powerful gaming laptop that easily runs the latest AAA titles while still utilising the 120Hz refresh rate display.
