OCZ have been at the forefront of Solid State drive development now for quite some time. We weren't sure what to expect from the tuned Vertex 3 240gb MAX IOPS drive, but it is clear that it is leading the pack when it comes to throughput performance.
Testing shows that while some of the benchmarks are very close, the IOMeter scores are in a different class, falling just shy of the claimed 65,000 IOPS. Staggering results. The new range of Sandforce powered drives are incredibly fast and they have no discernible weaknesses either. Sequential performance from all the Sandforce 2281 powered units is incredible, and the 4k results are miles ahead of the previous range of products.
The synthetic results show that OCZ have certainly applied their ‘magic' tweaks behind the scenes to enhance throughput performance. Depending on your particular demands this could be very noticeable. The Toshiba 3xNM NAND flash is a worthwhile addition to the MAX IOPS.
The UK price point hasn't yet been confirmed but we expect a small premium over the reference Vertex 3 drive meaning it should come in at around £470 inc vat (£10-£15 more expensive). In all honesty this is a great price for such a large drive with these blazingly quick performance characteristics.
Pros:
- IOPS performance is the best we have seen from a single drive
- If you want to stress your new SATA 6GBps interface, then these are the drives to use
Cons:
- Many will opt for the smaller 120GB version due to the price.
KitGuru says: Fast enough for you? If not, then Raid 0 a pair.
Christ thats a quick SSD. I thought my 40GB intel one was good :p
Im still very impressed with the ADATA drive, its quite a bit cheaper and generally holds its own.
Its a lot of cash, but if I had it, id get one of these. would last for years. Cant see a new sata interface coming out soon anyway, so this is as good as it gets.
whats next sata 9GBps ?
Thats a really great idea. They cover all bases !
Why would the smaller drive have higher IOPS in one category?
OCZ make some great SSD’s I don’t think id buy anyone else. the 240GB is too rich for my blood. 120gb maybe…… any review coming up for it?
I still think these are small sellers, there is no way someone is spending almost 500 on an SSD for a system.
I read in the last review that OCZ wouldnt be bringing out a 60GB version of the vertex 3. have you any idea why? its an ideal size for a boot drive imho.
IOPS is where its at. but im not sure home users really need it. interesting to see OCZ with different versions of the same product. they certainly dont like to be surpassed in anything by other companies!
my next SSD, already saving up 😉
