The Samsung X5 1TB arrives in a well-built box with a slipover which displays an image of drive on the front along with its capacity in the bottom right hand corner. The rear of the slipover displays the speed rating of the drive, along with a note about it supporting 256-bit encryption and which version of Windows (Windows 10 64-bit RS2 or higher) and MacOS Sierra (version 10.12 or higher) it's compatible with.
Opening the box reveals the drive nestling in a plastic tray. Under this tray sits a quick start guide and a 0.5 meter Thunderbolt 3 cable.
At 150g the new drive is just over three times the weight of the previous T5 drive even with a magnesium design. This is mainly due to the solid lump of a heatsink that the drive uses.
The red base of the drive has a matt finish to help prevent it slipping off a desk etc. If it should drop it's be been designed to survive a drop of 2 meters.
Next to the Thunderbolt 3 port is a tiny white drive activity LED.
Samsung's portable SSD software allows you to set up a password to enable the AES 256-bit hardware data encryption. However at the time of writing this review, software updates are only supported for Windows OS.
