Available in three capacities, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, the Patriot PXD is a very small external SSD drive that uses a USB 3.2 Type-C interface. A sleek aluminium design, it measures just 103 x 30.1 x 9mm and weighs in at just 35g. The PXD uses a 4-channel Phison PS5013-E13T controller together with, in the case of the review drive, 1TB of 3D TLC NAND.
The official Sequential performance figures for the 1TB drive are up to 1,000MB/s for both reads and writes. Using the ATTO benchmark we couldn’t quite reach those maximum figures but the 970MB/s reads and 938MB/s writes we did get, are still very respectable figures from an external drive.
We did, however, match the official figure for reads at least when testing the drive with CrystalDiskMark 7 using compressible data, with the drive producing result figures of 1,017MB/s and 980MB/s for reads and writes respectively.
Real-life file transfers saw the write performance topping the 500MB/s mark when transferring large data files to a SATA interfaced SSD. Reading the same data back saw the drive's performance pass the 450B/s mark on a few occasions. Swapping out the SATA based SSD for a PCIe NVMe drive saw the fastest write speed of 824MB/s when transferring the 4K Movie Clips folder which is some 295MB/s faster than when the SATA SSD was being used.
The drive did get a little warm when being tested but that’s because it was being pushed hard during the benchmarking process.
The 1TB version of the PXD has an MSRP of €189.99, though we are waiting on confirmed UK pricing at the time of publication.
