Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W PSU Review

The Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W is an attractively designed power supply which makes a positive first impression. The packaging and bundle is indicative of a premium priced product and we particularly welcomed the resealable felt bag with individual pouches for all the modular cabling.

Aesthetically, this is as good looking a power supply as you are likely to find and we have to compliment Fractal on the black and white paint options, to accommodate a wide audience of enthusiast user.

The quality of the modular cables themselves are excellent and the thin ribbon style proves popular now with the demanding enthusiast audience as they are easier to route and better for chassis airflow.

Technically, the Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W is an excellent power supply although it does exhibit weaker than expected ripple suppression on the +3.3V and +5V rails. The results don't fall outside the tolerance guidelines, however they are close to the borderline (40mV for +3.3V and 45mV for +5V). The +12V rail results were much better however, peaking at 50mV which is well within the industry rated maximum specifications of 120mV.

In other regards we have no concerns, the load regulation is excellent and the unit coped well with our stress inducing cross load tests. Efficiency is truly excellent and the semi fanless mode means that the NEWTON R3 is quiet under most circumstances. The fan only spins up noticeably over a sustained 700W load.

The Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W power supply should hit retail in the United Kingdom for around the £159.95 inc vat mark. This is very competitive pricing for a modular, 80 Plus Platinum rated 1000W power supply. The Seasonic 1000W Platinum Modular unit is undoubtedly superior in the same class, but it does cost around £40 more than the Newton R3 1000W.

Pros:

  • Competitive pricing.
  • cable storage bag is the best we have seen.
  • build quality is excellent.
  • voltage regulation.
  • high efficiency levels.
  • modular cables are high quality.
  • quiet under general operation.
  • 5 year warranty.

Cons:

  • not a pure modular design.
  • ripple suppression on +3.3v and +5v could be better.

Kitguru says: A competitively priced, high quality option for a new, demanding system build.

  1. I really like this, the pricing is good too. keeping my eye out for it. are they making a new 850W unit?

  2. They make great products, this would suit my fractal case in white. Not sure I need 1000W. a 750W or 850W would make more sense. still good to see them doing so well in such an area. one of my favourite new companies.

  3. Thats a heck of a price in the UK, although I can only find it on amazon for £10 more. waiting on scan or OCUK.

Seasonic 1000w platinum is much better, but its £200.

  4. Its not a pure modular design which is slightly disappointing. I wouldnt mind normally but why not make all the PCIe cables modular? too many cables hardwired for my tastes

  5. Excuse my ignorance, but the ripple on the 3.3 and 5v output, is that not dangerous being so close to the recommended limit? or is it not a concern ? just working out if its worth a purchase

  6. I like the white one. It looks clean and classy. I think i will put this as one of the top power supply psu on my list. Great post.:)
