Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W PSU Review

The Fractal Design NEWTON R3 1000W power supply ships in a beautiful heavy duty box with several high resolution images of the unit on the front. The company mention the five year warranty, Crossfire/Sli support and 80 Plus Platinum certification.

The rear of the box features details of the design including the cabling, Premium Japanese capacitors and semi passive fan operation. The outer cover slides off the top to expose the inner white box underneath.

First impressions are very positive. The user manual is adhered to a plastic sheet which rests on top of the unit itself and there is a ‘greeting' page thanking you for buying the power supply. Underneath, the power supply is protected between thick slabs of foam.

The power supply ships protected inside a branded nylon bag.

Inside there is a user manual, regional specific power plug, a modular cabling bag and a little plastic card. This card explains that if the fan isn't spinning that it doesn't immediately mean there is a fault.

The fan won't spin up until a specific load, or ambient temperature is reached. We have seen this before with some Corsair/Seasonic power supplies.

The modular cable bag certainly does deserve some special mention. It is one of the best we have seen, bar none. All of the cables are stored in individually named pouch sections as can be seen above. They are the flat ‘ribbon' style cables which are beneficial for airflow. (The last picture above shows the hardwired cables).

The power supply has six PCIe cables to cover a wide range of SLI and Crossfire gaming systems. The cables are also very long, to suit taller tower cases.

  1. I really like this, the pricing is good too. keeping my eye out for it. are they making a new 850W unit?

  2. They make great products, this would suit my fractal case in white. Not sure I need 1000W. a 750W or 850W would make more sense. still good to see them doing so well in such an area. one of my favourite new companies.

  3. Thats a heck of a price in the UK, although I can only find it on amazon for £10 more. waiting on scan or OCUK.

Seasonic 1000w platinum is much better, but its £200.

  4. Its not a pure modular design which is slightly disappointing. I wouldnt mind normally but why not make all the PCIe cables modular? too many cables hardwired for my tastes

  5. Excuse my ignorance, but the ripple on the 3.3 and 5v output, is that not dangerous being so close to the recommended limit? or is it not a concern ? just working out if its worth a purchase

  6. I like the white one. It looks clean and classy. I think i will put this as one of the top power supply psu on my list. Great post.:)
