Cooler Master X Silent Edge Platinum 1100W Review

The Cooler Master X Silent Edge Platinum 1100W power supply is the most powerful passively cooled power supply on the market today and due to clever heatpipe/heatsink chassis design, it does a very good job of maintaining excellent temperatures inside the unit itself.

I have to give Cooler Master credit for coming up with such a smart cooling system. It must have taken some time to successfully incorporate a heatpipe block connected to an outer heatsink plate comprising the underside of the chassis. Clearly the company's history with cooling over the decades has been the foundation for such a clever implementation. Cooler Master not only designed this cooling system in house, but the power supply was built by them directly without the help of any OEM partner.

Ripple suppression is excellent, load regulation scores highly and the fact that it does not emit any noise at any load demand will be a key selling point to a niche audience of PC users. I for one really struggle with fan noise in my gaming room so this power supply would be a very welcome addition to my system. Technically this unit delivers some fantastic results and it is worth pointing out that we didn't experience any coil whine from the unit either. This is often not the case with a passively cooled power supply.

The only real downside with this power supply is that we have been told it will cost £473.99 inc. VAT in the UK. It will only be available via the Cooler Master store in the EU region.

While it is pretty obvious from the outset, this power supply is specifically targeting a high end enthusiast user who really wants to reduce system noise as much as possible – perhaps someone with a watercooled system who wants to get rid of as many fans as possible. There is no doubt this is a significant investment, but I have been incredibly impressed with not only the looks and design of the X Silent Edge 1100W, but also the performance. The heatpipe/heatsink design is inspired and the class leading build quality combined with a 15 year warranty direct from Cooler Master goes some way to justify the premium.

I would definitely buy one of these myself for my main gaming system and that's about the highest recommendation I can give it.

Update: Cooler Master have sent us a retail link for UK buyers, with the 1100W model at £473.99 and the 850W unit at 449.99. You can buy both from Quiet PC HERE.
