MSI X99A XPower Gaming Titanium Motherboard Review

ATTO Disk Benchmark

The ATTO disk benchmark is a Windows-based utility for testing storage performance of any storage drive or controller. We use the default benchmark setup and run this on an OCZ Trion 150 SSD directly connected to the SATA ports and then again over a USB 3.0 port using a USB 3.0 to SATA III adapter. For M.2 NVMe testing we connect the Toshiba OCZ RD400 drive, in NVMe mode, to a PCIe-capable M.2 slot.

Storage performance varies little across a range of X99 motherboards when using the X99 controller.

In USB 3.0 testing we did find that the four USB 3.0 ports powered by the VIA VL805 controller were considerably slower than their Intel counterparts.

Rightmark Audio Analyser

Rightmark Audio Analyser is a freeware benchmarking utility designed to objectively test the performance characteristics of audio solutions. We setup a line-in line-out loop and execute the record/playback test before generating the results report you see below. This test was run at 16bit audio depth and 192KHz frequency.

Audio performance was very good across the range of tests and in line with all other X99 motherboards using the Realtek ALC1150 codec. Only when the audio codec is changed to something else should you expect to see a significant variation in results.

The RightMark numbers shape up well and so should the user listening experience with audio enhancements provided by Nahimic software and a couple of amplifiers to boost output for headphones.

Power Consumption

We leave the system to idle on the Windows 10 desktop for 5 minutes before taking a reading, for CPU load results we run Cinebench and take a reading in the middle of the render progress.

  2. Using MSI’s command center and turning off hyperthreading, I’m able to hit a stable & usable 4.6ghz on the X99A Titanium with a 5930k & 32Gb of Corsair RAM @ 2400Mhz. Extended gaming or video encoding with a Corsair H110i GT, the cpu never gets warmer than 58C. This is some very nice gear. I’m quite satisfied with how it all works together, and it looks stunning inside the Enthoo Luxe chassis.

  3. My X99A gaming pro carbon was able to clock the 6800k to 4.2 GHz at 1.251 volts, and 4.1 GHz at 1.194 volts, but 4.3 GHz at 1.3 volts, Windows would crash after booting up. I haven’t tried 1.315 or 1.32 volts yet.

  4. What voltage are you using for the CPU @4.6ghz?
