Kingston HyperX Predator 2666mhz Memory review (Z77)

Kingston's HyperX Predator 2666mhz is an extremely high performance memory kit targeting the enthusiast audience who wish to squeeze every last ounce of bandwidth from their new system build.

In the past a market leading memory kit such as this was priced out of reach for most people, however Kingston have been very aggressive with their marketing strategy in 2012. They were the first company to squeeze the price of a 256GB SSD to under £100 this year.

While availability of the HyperX Predator 2,666mhz memory has not yet been confirmed, the company have informed us that this 8GB kit will be priced at £114.84 inc vat.

This is obviously still notably more expensive than an 8GB kit of 2,133mhz memory, however there is always a premium to pay for buying into the ultra high end sector of any market. I actually feel it offers reasonably good value for money, especially when factoring in the performance results we have achieved today.

If you have a capable motherboard, then there is some additional overclocking headroom. We managed to crank the speeds to over 2,800mhz which resulted in tangible bandwidth benefits across the board, particularly as we didn't need to loosen any of the timings to compensate.

We have no hesitation in recommending this kit to the enthusiast user who needs as much system bandwidth as possible. This not only means gamers, but those people who edit video and render 3D content on a regular basis.

Pros:

  • Beautiful design.
  • fantastic performance via the XMP profile.
  • overclocking capabilities to 2,800mhz+

Cons:

  • expensive.
  • large heatspreaders may cause compatibility issues with some oversized CPU heatsinks such as Noctua NH D14.

Kitguru says: A quality kit from Kingston, targeting the ultra high end audience.

  1. almost wet myself at those results. Any ideas when its out? I bought a Corsair H100 last month, what a cooler ! love it to death.

  2. Very impressive kit. That said, 2,666mhz memory is still a little overpriced IMO. 2,400mhz is a lot cheaper and I wouldn’t think many people could notice the difference in the real world.

im waiting on 3,200mhz kits 🙂

  3. you can get 16GB of slightly slower memory for 2,666mhz prices. Not for me, but interesting to read. I can see it being worthwhile in the pro industry for rendering.

  4. @ Darth Digglers. No one needs 16GB of memory for gaming or even ordinary duties. id rather put the money into speed, not quanitity.

  5. Good memory, shame they went for such huge heatspreaders, id have bought 16GB of it for my Z77 board, but id need to check my phanteks cooler I reckon before it would work right in the slots due to spacing.
