Kingston HyperX 2400mhz Review (8GB KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX)

When we received the Kingston HyperX 2,400mhz memory for the X79 platform, we were immediately pleased to note that the company had opted for a much smaller heatspreader design. There really is no need now for oversized heatspreaders, especially as they cause such fitting issues with specific CPU coolers.

In regards to performance, there is little we can fault, as the kit can deliver over 45 GB/s of memory bandwidth, one of the primary benefits with the X79 Quad Channel implementation. We were also able to improve the DRAM COMMAND mode from 2T to 1T, after manual tweaks.

Unfortunately however for Kingston, both Corsair GTX8 and G.Skill RipJawsZ memory products allow for tighter timings, which can enhance performance to around 51 GB/s. At this level, it may seem like such a small deal, but 5GB/s-6GB/s of extra bandwidth isn't easily ignored.

In our recent review of the G.Skill RipjawsZ 16GB kit for instance, we were able to get the timings to 10-12-10-30 1T, which was a truly incredible result. This Kingston memory is limited to 11-13-11 1T, which explains the slightly worse overall performance. When you factor in that each of the G.Skill memory sticks is double the capacity of the HyperX it is made even more impressive.

Kingston don't have pricing for this product and we can't see any availability, so it is difficult to come to a scoring conclusion. We can certainly recommend the product as ‘worth buying' due to the overall performance and quality of design. It isn't the fastest 2,400mhz memory we have tested, but we know Kingston products are very reliable long term.

Aria sell Kingston products, which you can see in list format – here.

Pros:

  • Compact heatspreader design.
  • No instability problems.
  • XMP profile means it is a one click setup process.

Cons:

  • Not as tight (fast) as Corsair GTX8 or G.Skill RipjawsZ 2,400mhz kits.

Kitguru says: If you can find it anywhere, certainly worth a look.

  1. THank god they are killing that huge heatspreader. looks impressive on their website but its stupid.

  2. Very nice. wish I could afford the rest of the system.

Only problem I would have, why 8GB? id clearly go for 16GB with a system like this, seems very miserable for the platform. G.Skill have this round!

  3. Ordinary sized heatspreaders! finally.

I like kingston memory, always been reliable for me. this memory hasn’t impressed me. 13 timings are very loose, its not much of an achievement for one of the market leaders.

  4. Excellent choice for Gamers and builder who wants a stable Windows 7 64-bit PC systems. I played Crysis 2 and the game is very smooth as I am using Radeon HD 6950 2GB and together with this Kingston HyperX 8GB Kit. When not playing games, I do my system laboratory using VMWare Workstation 7 and running 5 virtual machines on top my Windows 7. I run Citrix laboratory using VM’s and my virtual lab is very fast.
