G.Skill Trident Z5 Royal DDR5-6400MT/s 64GB Review

The Trident Z5 Royal range is G.Skill's luxury class memory and it certainly lives up to the billing in the looks department! Offering a choice of two mirror finishes, silver (our review sample) or gold (only certain models) on the heatsinks and an impressive-looking crystalline light bar covering the LEDs.

The Royal line-up, which supports Intel XMP 3.0, is made up of six choices of speed and four kit capacities. The entry-level speed is 6400MT/s (32GB, 64GB and 96GB kits) then comes 7200MT/s (32GB and 48GB kits), 7600MT/s (32GB kit) with the  8000MT/s, 8200MT/s and the flagship (at the time of writing) 8400MT/s all coming as 48GB kits. Latency wise the DDR5-6400 kits are available at CL30-39-39-102 (32GB) and CL32-39-39-102 (32GB and 64GB) all at 1.40V while the 96GB 6400 kit is rated at 32-39-39-102 at 1.35V.

The memory that G.Skill kindly sent in for review is one of the 64GB DDR5-6400 kits (F5-6400J3239G32GX2-TR5S) using SK Hynix A-die memory chips. It runs natively at DDR5-4800 with timings of 40-40-40-77 (1.10V) but the single Intel XMP 3.0 profile bumps this up to 6400MHz at 1.40V (32-39-39-102).

The modules are 44mm high giving a wider range of compatibility with air coolers and motherboards but it's their appearance sets them apart from the opposition. The heatspreader covers are made from CNC-cut aluminium which is then electroplated in either silver or gold to produce a highly reflective surface. This mirrored finish surface is a fingerprint magnet but both sides of the module have thin plastic covers to protect them during installation. G.Skill does supply a cleaning cloth with the memory just in case you can't resist fondling the modules from time to time.

Sitting on the top of the modules the crystalline light bar covers eight LED segments. These LEDs are very bright but they can be turned down in the software. If you want the memory to be integrated into an existing light scheme most of the 3rd party software is catered for with support for ASRock Polychrome Sync, Asus Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light Sync and Gigabyte RGB Fusion 2.0. The other option is to use G.Skill's own Trident Z Lighting Control utility which can be downloaded from the G.Skill site. The Trident Z Lighting Control supports up to four independent profiles with their own custom light setup.  The software has fourteen lightening effects and a wide colour palette and modules can be synced or set up as individual units so pretty much the sky is the limit when it comes to custom schemes.
