Patriot Viper Steel DDR4-4400MHz 16GB (2x8GB) Memory Review

Often the least desirable or exciting part of any system build, it's easy to overlook system memory in favour of a better processor or graphics card. By contrast, Patriot's Viper Steel DDR4-4400MHz kit is at the opposite end of the spectrum where it's speed and associated price premium make it a centrepiece, not to be overlooked.

Needless to say that the majority of system builders, even enthusiasts, would do well to settle for something that's fast…but not this fast. Such high frequencies pose compatibility issues, diminishing returns on performance and the price premium typically associated with highly-binned memory kits.

Most prospective buyers would do well to consider something in the 3,600-4,000MHz range instead, and Patriot has that frequency range fully covered with the Viper Steel series too. As with many DRAM vendors Patriot is attempting to make use of the “trickle down” effect; Patriot lures consumers in with the publicity around the premium high speed memory kit but actually sells the majority of memory kits at the more affordable end of the spectrum, 3,000-3,600MHz.

Patriot's Viper Steel modules, in general but also in this configuration, perform great, have a subtle & smart design and offer prospective buyers excellent value for money. In that regard, these memory kits should certainly not be overlooked when making your next system build or upgrade, just remember to check for compatibility if buying 4,000MHz or higher.

The Patriot Memory Viper Steel DDR4-4400MHz 16GB memory kit is available in the UK for around £150 from retailers such as at Lambda Tek and eBuyer, it is sold with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. In the USA it is stocked by retailers such as Amazon and Newegg for around $160 with the same warranty terms.

Pros:

  • Excellent performance.
  • Competitively priced against rivals.
  • Clean and simple design.
  • Limited lifetime warranty.

Cons:

  • No RGB (potentially not a “con” for some people).
  • Loosely secured heatspreader.
  • Module height may be an issue for system builders using air CPU coolers.

KitGuru says: Patriot's Viper Steel DDR4 memory is affordable, stylish and high-performance. If you're shopping around for memory, take a second look.
