Closing Thoughts.
The light show produced by Corsair's Dominator Platinum RGB is very good and is a step change over the previous Vengeance RGB. It is hard to judge how much credit is due to the new Capellix technology but the overall effect is superb.
It is clear the fully addressable nature of the lighting is a large part of the deal and the way the iCUE software works is a revelation. We were very happy with the intensity of the LEDs and the way the light is diffused – so the answer to the big question, whether we are happy with the light show produced by Dominator Platinum RGB, is a resounding ‘Yes’.
Balanced against that we also admire the lighting in a high end Phanteks case such as the EvolvX along with their Halos fan frames. To the best of our knowledge Phanteks uses conventional LEDs however the overall look is superb, which makes it tricky to decide whether Capellix brings much to the party in Dominator Platinum RGB.
We have every confidence that Capellix will prove its worth in peripherals such as mice or AIO coolers where it can be tricky to densely package LEDs and produce a stunning light show. By contrast it seems that packaging a row of LEDs along the length of DDR4 RAM is little more than a trial run. Corsair knew that Dominator Platinum RGB would look great and provided they selected the correct DDR4 it would also perform well and Corsair has scored well on both those counts.
There is no denying that Dominator Platinum RGB is expensive however our experience with the KitGuru readership is that pricing of some components is inelastic. You either want some of this new DDR4 or you do not and the pricing doesn’t much matter. Having said that, if you buy a kit of the 4,800MHz Dominator Platinum RGB, do please post a photo as that is in a different league!
Our concern about Capellix is that Corsair might try to increase prices of mice, keyboards, headsets and AIOs where they use this new RGB. We shall naturally take each of those products on their own merits but in the meantime Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB counts as a success. We are impressed.
Pros:
- Very tight 14-14-14-34 timings in this particular kit of DDR4.
- The control provided by iCUE 3.1 is exceptional.
- Capellix LED lighting looks superb.
- Samsung B-die performs exceptionally well.
Cons:
- Corsair Dominator Platinum has tall heat spreaders.
- Pricing is fairly steep.
- RGB Heathens will be offended.
