Fallout 4’s high-resolution texture pack for PC requires a really high-end rig

While Bethesda might be all done cranking out season pass DLC for Fallout 4, the studio isn't quite finished with the game entirely. Next week, not only with there be a PS4 Pro upgrade for this game, but PC players will finally be able to download the high-resolution texture pack, requiring an additional 58GB of space and raising the game's system requirements significantly- to the point where it calls for an AMD GPU that doesn't exist yet.

Bethesda announced the high-resolution texture pack yesterday, including a single 4K screenshot of what to expect from the graphical upgrade, which you can see below.

Obviously, these higher resolution textures also require beefier hardware to keep the game running smoothly. Here are the recommended specs:

  • Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit required).
  • Intel Core i7-5820K or better.
  • Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB or AMD Radeon RX 490 8GB.
  • 8GB+ of RAM.

Obviously, the RX 490 doesn't actually exist yet and once that was pointed out to Bethesda, the studio edited its blog post to remove its mention. However, this wouldn't be the first time that mention of the RX 490 has appeared. In the past, this GPU has appeared on AMD's own website and there have been some rumours suggesting that the RX 490 could be a Vega-based graphics card, set for release in the first half of 2017.

KitGuru Says: Chances are this was just a mistake on Bethesda's part and not any sort of nod towards an upcoming RX 490. Either way though, the system requirements for the high-resolution texture pack set the bar very high. Not only do you need an extra 58GB of space but you will also need a £600 graphics card to run it smoothly.

  1. So are they selling this? Ouch another 58GB of space and specs that most people do not have. No thanks I already played this and finished it and it is now on the backup drive just in case I ever decide to play it again.

  2. free update, just like the texture pack for skyrim years ago.

  3. obvious marketing gimmick, you can download HD texture pack mods right now without those specs.

  4. Sweet. thanks for the info.

  5. I might look up a HD texture pack mod for it then. The requirements seem a bit steep for the dev sponsored one. A 1080 maybe or even a pair of 390x’s because of the 8GB framebuffer requirement but the CPU they list seems like overkill wouldn’t i7 4/8 OC be better at 4.7GHz.

  6. When my Dad looked at the tv when i’m playing this, he said to me to stop playing games all the time. Last night, I played RE7 and he said what am I watching. Got me thinking, F4 doesn’t have good lightning and shadows, what can HD textures do anyway.

  7. More like something fun they did on the side. It’s free, why are you complaining?

  8. spec list. publishers are inflating them more and more. hell in this instance bethesda is marketing AMD’s new unreleased card.

point is i don’t like being lied to.

  9. There’s mods for that

  11. not even close

  12. This is what should happen all the time.
Most games should have options to push hardware to the extreme.
(Obviously looking after dell owners with their POP cards).

  13. given the massive size of this texture pack, it is likely both highly detailed and improves nearly every texture in the game. Most mods only improve certain textures (rocks and foliage for example). The graphics recommendations are likely as much for the 8gb frame buffer as the actual horsepower. Playing at 4k now already requires a surprising amount of power. As for the cpu, a 5820k is a 6 core. While a 6700k or 7700k will probably do just fine, the 6 core recommendation implies a cpu heavy workload. This does seem odd though because simply improving the textures shouldn’t increase the cpu load much, so there must be other things going on there.

  14. Reminds me of when Crysis came out and nothing could handle the Extreme graphics x’D

  15. i’m not clear, is this a 4k mod? As in is it pointless with 1080p?

  16. my single 390x plays this fine at 1440p with the texture pack and it makes a big difference at that resolution.
