EVGA to launch GTX 980Ti ‘VR Edition’

EVGA came to CES this year armed with a new GTX 980TI to show off. This time, EVGA is gearing up to launch a ‘VR Edition' GPU, featuring the tried and true ACX cooler along with some extras aimed specifically at those looking to upgrade their rig for virtual reality headsets launching this year.

So what is different about the ‘VR Edition' 980Ti? Well, it comes with a dedicated mini HDMI port that hooks up to a 5.25″ drive bay attachment, which features an HDMI output along with two USB 3.0 ports for hooking up a virtual reality headset. Though the Oculus Rift will actually require an additional USB 3.0 port as well as a USB 2.0 port to set up properly.

At the moment, the GTX 980TI VR Edition is expected to launch with EVGA's ACX 2.0 cooler but there will be a second reference design version as well. Right now, there is no information on pricing or availability, though we would guess that EVGA will be planning to push this out around the time the new virtual reality headsets from Oculus and HTC start shipping, if not a bit before.

KitGuru Says: While the Oculus Rift is more expensive than many anticipated, there are still likely quite a few people looking to upgrade in time for VR. Are any of you planning on adopting virtual reality this year? Will you be grabbing a new GPU for the occasion?

  1. So, it’s ‘VR’ 980ti, by way of coming with an attachment to service the extra ports required by the Rift but the attachment falls short on ports to support it completely. Sounds like a waste of time.

  3. Not really. while I’m only speculating based on a couple of pictures of the camera that ships with the rift, I suspect that the rift itself will only have two USB3 connectors and a HDMI connector. The other USB3 port is actually for the camera (there are pictures of the camera with the cable coiled, showing a USB3 connector at the end of the cable) the USB2 is likely for the X-BOne controllers dongle.

So effectively the camera would be plugged in around the back because you won’t likely need to unplug it, ever. Same with the X-BOne dongle while the rift will be used occasionally so will naturally be plugged into the HDMI AND USB3 ports up front offered by this breakout attachment, meaning you don’t need to faff behind the PC each time you want to use it.

  4. If if I hadn’t already have upgraded my GPU (not specifically for VR, but I at least have the GPU for it now), I would have bought this, assuming it’s priced reasonably. My cheap mobo and its lack of USB ports is the only component preventing me from using the Rift – my CPU/GPU/RAM exceed the recommended Rift spec now.

4 USB ports for the Rift is really just too much for me.

I have a bad habit of building a new rig when I need to upgrade the mobo, so this could have actually saved me some money, as I suspect that’s what I’ll be doing if I do decide to get the Rift (I’m on the fence)

  6. there is no way the rift needs more than two usb 3.0 ports. and the camera probably needs one by itself. this is designed to place the ports into the front of your computer instead of the rear. Allowing you easy access to any additional 3.0 ports that are locate din the front of your case if you have any. this is made to spare you the 3.0 ports that are in the back of your motherboard. Also most of us will be in front of your computers using the rift so having that many cables coming up from the ground to our lap may be a bit much or coming up under our keyboard tray would suck as well not to mention the stress it would put on the cables when it flexes around that way. so keeping it all in the front is indeed brilliant.
