AMD’s Radeon HD 7950 is set to receive a speed boost

With the nVidia GTX 660 Ti's release imminent, AMD's popular HD 7950 graphics card will soon be the recipient of a clock speed-boosting BIOS update.

The update is intended to better prepare the 6 month old card for the stiff competition that it should receive from nVidia's GeForce GTX 660 Ti.

The speed boost will increase a reference model HD 7950's clock speed from 800MHz to 850MHz. PowerTune with Boost will allow the clock speed to jump up to 925MHz when required.

Everything else on the card remains the same, including the 1250Mhz memory frequency. New cards featuring the improved clock speed will be manufactured from mid-August.

This speed increase will be provided by means of a BIOS update and, as such, is only intended for use with reference cards. Flashing to the new BIOS is also likely to void the warranty offered by partnering board manufacturers.
