The AMD Radeon RX 7900M may outperform the Nvidia RTX 4080 laptop GPU

Although AMD announced the Radeon RX 7900M months ago, we are only now seeing the first laptops featuring AMD's new mobile GPU. While we've seen ‘official' benchmarks already, we are now starting to see independent third-party benchmark results, putting the RX 7900M up against the competition.

Using an Alienware M18, GizmoSlipTech (via VideoCardz) was able to give us an early look at the Radeon RX 7900M's capabilities. The laptop tested packed an AMD Ryzen 7945HX processor and a 1920×1200 display with a 480Hz refresh rate. This configuration is priced at $2,799, more affordable than the M18 with a Core i9-13900HX and an RTX 4080, which costs $2,999.

Although GizmoSlipTech's initial benchmark of the RX 7900M is based on 3DMark Time Spy, it's not on the Extreme preset. Therefore, it may not provide a complete framework for comparison until additional benchmarks become available. Still, a quick check with the official 3DMark ranking shows that the RX 7900M outperforms the RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, which scores 18923 points. Compared to the 19,743 graphics score of the RX 7900M, AMD's mobile GPU is 4.3% faster.

The Radeon RX 7900M is powered by the Navi 31 GPU with 72 CUs (equivalent to 4608 streaming processors), 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and a 256-bit memory bus. The card's clock speed can reach up to 2090MHz and may push up to 180W of power.

KitGuru says: In this case, the Radeon RX 7900M may be faster than the RTX 4080. However, this is a single case of a synthetic benchmark. It may not be the same when we bring other modern synthetic benchmarks and actual games into the comparison.
