Nvidia launches RTX 4090D for the Chinese market following US sanctions

Due to political reasons, Nvidia has been forced to launch a new RTX 4090 series SKU in China. This new GPU will be named RTX 4090D and is already available at select Chinese retailers. Pricing remains unchanged compared to the standard RTX 4090.

This launch comes after the RTX 4090 card faced import limitations in China, a crucial market for Nvidia. To meet US government limits on GPU shipments to China, the company had to make some changes to the current RTX 4090 SKU.

Contrary to previous rumours, Nvidia has made several changes to the RTX 4090 specs. The core count of the RTX 4090D version has been reduced from 16,384 to 14,592, representing a significant decrease. Additionally, Tensor cores have been reduced from 512 to 456 and the TDP from 450W to 425W. On the other hand, the base clock increased slightly, from 2235MHz to 2280MHz. The only things that remain untouched regarding core specs are the boost clock (2520MHz) and the memory subsystem, comprising the same 24GB of GDDR6X memory running at 21Gbps across a 384-bit interface.

As board partners reveal their designs, it seems that the visual features of the new graphics card are pretty similar to the original RTX 4090 models. The official pricing for the RTX 4090D in China is the same as the standard RTX 4090, with the new graphics cards starting at RMB 12,999 (£1,446).

KitGuru says: We won't be seeing this graphics card sold outside of China but considering the cuts made to the GPU, it will be interesting to see how much of a lead it holds over the rumoured upcoming RTX 4080 Super.
