Nvidia has already sold around 160,000 RTX 40 series graphics cards

Despite their MSRPs, the RTX 40 series graphics cards are selling relatively well. Currently, sales for the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 combined sit at around 160,000 units according to the latest analytics. Given that the RTX 4080 only just became available, fewer units have been sold, so there are around 130,000 RTX 4090s out in the wild, compared to 30,000 RTX 4080s.

The numbers come from Hassan Mujtaba, who also added that the RTX 4090 cards were “pretty much sold out at launch”, which can be considered a sign of success. On the other hand, it has almost passed a week since the release of the RTX 4080, but retailers still have them in stock. That suggests the RTX 4080 may not be as attractive as the flagship RTX 40 series GPU.

Overall, it seems buyers don't believe the RTX 4080 delivers the performance to justify the steep price Nvidia, retailers and manufacturers are asking for. It is also possible that a lot of buyers are holding off a bit longer to see what AMD brings to the table with its RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX graphics cards, both of which will hit the market at under £1000.

If Nvidia sees AMD winning market share in this price range, the company might be forced to rethink its pricing in order to compete. We need to see performance numbers first though, as well as board partner pricing for custom cards, as these can often be significantly more expensive than reference models.
