Benchmark suggests upcoming AMD Radeon 780M iGPU will be as fast as the Nvidia MX550

We are still a little while away from Ryzen 7000HS-equipped laptops becoming available to consumers, but some already have these new-gen laptops on hand for testing. In a recently spotted benchmark run, we see the new Radeon 780M iGPU in action.

Over at Bilibili (via VideoCardz), a user shared what most likely are the first benchmark results of the Radeon 780M iGPU found on the 8-core Ryzen 9 7940HS and Ryzen 7 7840HS chips. In this case, the system was equipped with the Ryzen 9 alongside 32GB of single-rank DDR5-5600 memory. The driver installed on the system was only used for testing purposes, so performance should further improve with the final release.

Above we can see the results of two runs. In the first screenshot, the chip was limited to 25W, scoring an overall score of 2,780 points, a graphics score of 2,486 points, and a CPU score of 8,448 points. On the second one, the chip was running at 54W, allowing it to improve all scores, increasing the system to 3,146, the graphics to 2,791 points, and the CPU to 11,343 points.

The RDNA 3-based Radeon 780M iGPU packs 12 CUs that can clock up to 3.0 GHz (2.9GHz on the Ryzen 7 7840HS). However, the screenshots show the clock speed capped at 2.8 GHz. Even so, the graphics scores are between 8% to 22% higher than what the Radeon 680M can do.

Another point of comparison would be with Nvidia’s entry-level MX 500 laptop GPUs. Although the MX570 scores higher than the upcoming Radeon iGPU, the MX550 falls short, scoring around 2,500 points in the same benchmark.

KitGuru says: With iGPUs continuing to improve, we may see little room in the market for entry-level discrete mobile GPUs moving forward.
